Open playbookSixteen playbooks for South African territories
Every franchise category has its own territory patterns. Dense urban nodes like the Gauteng Corridor run on freeway access, office clusters and retail anchors. In the Cape Metro, tourism flows, wind and neighbourhood gaps shape the catchment. The KZN Coast and Eastern Cape hubs are influenced by holiday peaks, school terms and regional logistics.
We have published sixteen territory playbooks, each focusing on a specific context: Gauteng Corridor, Cape Metro, KZN Coast, Eastern Cape hubs, Free State nodes, Limpopo nodes, Mpumalanga Lowveld, North West mining towns, Northern Cape sparse areas, cross-border towns, mall-anchored sites, high street strips, industrial parks, tourist nodes, township-adjacent sites and university edges. Each playbook covers travel times, anchor sites, lease patterns, seasonal footfall and margin factors for that area.
Some models need high footfall, while others suit service calls over wide catchments. The right playbook helps you match your working capital and trade plan to your chosen site.
Territory and site type change your numbers
Each franchise model puts different numbers on the territory map. A mall-anchored site might have higher rent and centre marketing levies, but wider footfall. High street and industrial park sites rely on local business flows, parking and landlord terms. In sparse or mining areas, operators often run multi-town service models, which changes your travel and staff cost lines.
Disclosure documents must show territory rules, whether you get exclusivity, and the number of outlets by area. Check the projections for turnover and net profit in your region, and compare them to the national average. Site-specific costs such as backup power, municipal licences or security also vary by territory.
A Numbers & Notes session can show the impact of site type and location before you sign. Check figures for the specific territory proposed to you, and avoid relying on only the strongest results shown by the brand.
- Review outlet numbers for your area
- Test turnover assumptions with local footfall
- Check rent, levies and licence costs
- List backup costs for cold rooms or servers
- Ask about territory exclusivity and overlaps
How to use a territory playbook
Use the playbook for your target area to prepare your questions for the franchisor and to test your own capital plan. The playbook helps you spot gaps in working capital, margin or support in that territory.
Ask for the franchisor’s latest disclosure document covering your chosen area, including the list of current outlets and their contact details. You can visit or call them, as the Consumer Protection Act says you must be able to do.
If you want a field guide for your chosen territory, send us your details. We can walk you through the playbook, site review and the numbers relevant to your trade.
