Ninety day plan

A ninety day plan helps you set out what needs doing, by whom and when, as you get your new franchise open and running.

How and when to use a ninety day plan

A ninety day plan is most useful just before you commit to a new franchise, or as soon as your agreement is signed. It is a hands-on worksheet to help you track every step from site handover through to your first months of trading. New owners use it to share responsibilities with partners, managers or family members so no task is missed.

You can use the plan to guide conversations with your franchisor, accountant, or support team. The plan brings out practical issues, such as when to order opening stock, how payroll will be set up, and what still needs a firm date. If you are moving between phases, build, fitout, stock arrival, staff training or opening, it keeps each step in sight.

What the worksheet covers and how to fill it

The worksheet is divided into clear action lines for each practical step you will face in the first ninety days. You fill in the responsible person, date and any notes for each task. The plan starts with legal points like the franchise agreement, disclosure document and business registration, then runs through site handover, fitout, utilities and permits.

Every major area is covered, from staff onboarding and payroll setup to ordering stock, booking equipment and activating tills. You also record key contract start dates, SARS and municipal registrations, first deliveries and local compliance steps such as a Certificate of Acceptability for food premises or ECD registration for a childcare centre.

  • Signing and returning the franchise agreement
  • Securing municipal licences and clearances
  • Site handover and fitout milestones
  • Ordering opening stock and equipment
  • Setting up payroll and SARS requirements
  • Staff recruitment and training dates

What to do when you find a gap

If a line on your plan is blank or you cannot confirm who is responsible, raise it before you open. Missing steps can mean delays, extra costs or regulatory problems. Share your worksheet with your advisor, accountant or franchisor support to get clear answers.

Some issues need outside help. For example, you may need an attorney for lease terms, or an accountant for payroll and SARS registration. If you see a timing clash, adjust your sequence or flag it early so you do not risk missing a required permit or delivery. The worksheet works best as a live tool, updated as dates are fixed and tasks are assigned.
