Labour weekend grid
Check weekend staffing gaps and shift cover before you sign or invest in a franchise. Use our labour weekend grid to see where your plan will need more hands.

When to use the labour weekend grid
The labour weekend grid gives South African franchise buyers a way to map who is available for weekend and public holiday shifts before committing to a business. Many food, retail, beauty and care brands trade through weekends, so you need to know who will be on site and who is on call.
The grid is most useful during early planning, as you compare franchise types, work through fit checks, tour outlets or meet franchisors. It is especially valuable if you are thinking about a business where Saturday, Sunday and public holiday staffing can make or break your first months. Sectors like food service, retail floor, health, childcare and pet care all have peaks on these days, and a roster that works on paper can show gaps when you plot real names to real slots.
What is on the grid and how to fill it in
The weekend grid is a worksheet with columns for each shift from Friday afternoon through Sunday night, including public holidays. Fill in each row with the names or roles of staff, family or casuals you expect to cover each slot. Add extra notes if any staff are part-time, under 18, or need transport home after closing.
To use it, print the sheet and fill it as you speak to potential staff, check with your team or family, or test a proposed roster. Dont skip blank spaces: gaps are as important as filled lines, because these show where you'll need to recruit or pay overtime. Compare the grid to your legal maximum hours and the national minimum wage. Remember, Sunday and public holiday work must be paid at premium rates under the Basic Conditions of Employment Act.
- Staff names or roles per shift
- Friday, Saturday, Sunday and public holiday slots
- Notes for part-time or under-18 staff
- Transport and closing-time notes
- Check against legal hours and wage rates
What to do if you spot a problem
If the grid shows unfilled shifts or too many hours for one person, pause before you sign any franchise agreement. South African labour law limits ordinary hours to 45 a week, and Sunday or public holiday shifts must be paid at higher rates. If you see a pattern of gaps, you may need to budget for more casuals, overtime, or higher weekend rates.
Bring your filled grid to your Numbers & Notes session or Fit Finder review. We can help you assess staffing costs, look at working capital needs and point out when to get guidance from a labour consultant or attorney. Unfilled slots are an early warning that your plan needs work before you move forward.
