Mbombela logistics node

A buyer from Mbombela asked us to help them judge whether a logistics franchise node could work for them, given the region’s mix of city and corridor delivery routes.

A local buyer looks at delivery nodes

A business owner from Mbombela approached us after running a courier subcontract route for a few years. They wanted to know if stepping up to a full logistics franchise node was realistic, or if the risks in the Lowveld were too high.

They were looking at franchise systems focused on warehousing and last-mile delivery, with territory coverage from Mbombela west to White River and Barberton, and as far as Komatipoort. The buyer wanted to manage daily operations personally and spend time working with their teams instead of leaving management to others.

Going through documents and territory checks

We started with a Fit Finder session and confirmed they had the needed experience and temperament for logistics. Together, we reviewed a sample disclosure document. We checked that it was properly dated and signed by an authorised officer, and included clear territory maps, outlet numbers, written projections with their assumptions, and all other items required by CPA Regulation 3.

Next, we walked the likely node site near the N4, noting warehousing access, traffic flow and backup power needs for cold storage. We flagged the cost of a professional driving permit for truck drivers, and the need to register with the CIPC and SARS. We worked through Numbers & Notes to map start-up fees, ongoing working capital, and insurance lines.

Why the buyer adjusted their plans

After reviewing the full pack, the buyer decided to delay signing until they could confirm the territory’s growth potential. They visited two existing franchisees in Mpumalanga, as listed in the disclosure document, and found that volumes fluctuated more than they had expected.

They asked the franchisor for updated territory data and a fresh list of active franchisees, as the CPA allows. The buyer saw value in the franchise’s support structure but wanted clearer figures on route density before committing.

What to know before you sign

Other buyers considering a logistics node in Mbombela should prepare for hands-on work and careful cost planning. Meet current franchisees, test assumptions on route volume and factor in local warehousing and staff costs.

Check that the franchise agreement states your right to cancel within 10 business days on the first page. Make sure the disclosure document meets all CPA terms and gives you space to ask for updated numbers. A step-by-step review can save you from costly surprises.

  • Review territory maps and population data
  • Plan for PrDP costs if running trucks
  • Check insurance and backup power needs
  • Contact current franchisees directly
  • Use your CPA cooling-off period wisely
