Capital notes

Health & Wellness Path capital notes

Budget for upfront fees, fit-out, equipment, deposits and slow months in any health or wellness franchise. The right capital plan helps you handle seasonal dips and membership changes with less risk.

Every cost line to check first

Health and wellness franchises in South Africa cover fitness studios, physio-style clinics, and wellness centres with different capital demands. Most require a franchise fee, fit-out or vehicle (for mobile services), specialised equipment, opening stock or consumables, landlord deposits, and a working capital buffer. Equipment leases are common where upfront funds are tight, especially for gym, rehab or diagnostic setups.

Budget for ongoing royalties and the franchisor’s marketing levy. Many operators also pay for local marketing to attract early members. Cash outflow does not stop at launch, so your plan must stretch to cover slow months, particularly during holiday periods or when members pause for personal or health reasons.

Where buyers often miss the mark

New owners in this category often underbudget for the opening float. Fitness and wellness sites can see sharp dips in attendance during school holidays, flu season or winter. For clinical franchises, practitioner registration and insurance are extra lines that cannot be skipped.

Membership models bring churn risk: clients may join, leave and rejoin on short notice. If your float only covers two or three steady months, you risk missing payroll or essential supply orders in your first year. Leasing equipment helps with cash flow but raises your fixed monthly commitments.

Build a float from disclosure and peers

The disclosure document from the franchisor needs to include the number of outlets, annual turnover, changes in outlet count, and profits from the previous financial year. Use these to check seasonality. The document should also state the list of current franchisees: reach out to several, ask about their low and high months, and how long their opening capital lasted.

The working capital figure from the franchise pack is often best treated as a minimum. Compare it with current owner feedback, a float covering three to six quiet months is safer for this sector, especially where practitioner salaries, equipment finance and municipal rates are high.
