Education Path capital notes

Education Path capital notes help you budget for every upfront and ongoing cost in a tutoring, coding or skills franchise, before you commit or sign.

Typical capital cost lines in education

Education, tutoring and skills franchises in South Africa include maths, coding, reading, languages and enrichment centres. Your total capital outlay comes from a mix of one-time and recurring costs. Besides the upfront franchise fee, you may need to budget for centre fit-out or a branded vehicle, education equipment, digital licences and any opening inventory such as books or tablets.

Deposits for premises, security and utilities are often required before you get access. Monthly royalty fees and a marketing levy are standard across most concepts. Seasonal business cycles, like exam peaks and holiday dips, can affect income, so extra working capital or a cash float is essential.

If your offer includes aftercare or holiday clubs, check whether extended hours or extra staff are needed. Some education brands also ask for a local marketing launch budget, which is separate from the regular levy.

Where buyers often underbudget

Several costs in the education franchise category are easy to overlook. The first is working capital to cover quieter enrolment periods, such as between school terms or before exam rushes. New franchisees sometimes focus on the initial fit-out or tech spend but miss the extra float needed to pay staff and rent if revenue dips.

Many franchisees underestimate the pace at which parents pay, especially if the franchise collects monthly or by term. Late payments and low initial enrolment can stretch your float further. Tutor wages and mandatory training sessions before launch also add up, and municipal approvals or ECD registration may take longer than expected.

If your model sends tutors into homes or runs transport for learners, allow for fuel, vehicle maintenance, and the need for a Professional Driving Permit for staff. Under POPIA, collecting and storing parent and learner data legally may also need a small tech or legal setup fee.

Building your float with better numbers

A compliant disclosure document from the franchisor must include their current number of branches, recent turnover patterns and a directory of franchisees whom you are entitled to approach directly. Use these to test income patterns over a school year and pressure-test what cash float experienced franchisees recommend for your local area.

Ask current franchisees about their busiest and quietest months, how quickly they built up enrolment, and what they actually spent on launch versus what the head office projected. Compare the working capital figures in the disclosure document with real experiences and note any gaps.

Keep a clear record of every fee, deposit and recurring cost. If you plan to open in a new territory like Polokwane or Gqeberha, check with other franchisees in similar cities about utility deposits, staff availability and how long it took them to break even.

What to send us for review

To help you prepare your capital plan, send us your shortlisted brand types, city or suburb, how soon you want to open and your estimated investment range. If you have a draft franchise agreement or disclosure document, note the date on the cover.

Tell Zama Gxowa whether your plans centre on coding, language tuition, aftercare or subject support, since each model requires its own capital layout and operating funds. We can help check if you have allowed enough for slow cycles, staff, data protection and compliance steps.
