Pet weekend staffing
Pet retail and boarding see their busiest days on weekends. A clear staffing plan keeps service smooth and protects your takings when most clients arrive.

The weekend staffing challenge
Most South African pet retail, grooming and boarding businesses report Saturdays and Sundays as their busiest days. Owners must cover both higher customer traffic and longer service hours. Weekends also bring more drop-offs and collections, with many pet owners only available outside standard work hours.
Without enough team members on the floor or in kennels, queues form, animals wait longer for care, and transactions can be missed. Delays and mistakes in these peak times often lead to poor reviews, which can hurt repeat business. Many new buyers underestimate the true number of hands and hours needed to cover the weekend rush.
Legal and wage rules shape weekend work
South Africa’s Basic Conditions of Employment Act caps ordinary hours at 45 per week. Any work on Sundays or public holidays must be paid at a premium rate, unless Sunday is an ordinary work day for that employee. The national minimum wage is R30.23 per hour. Pet retail and boarding outlets may be covered by contract cleaning or other sector-specific wage rules, so check which rate applies to your outlet.
Rotas must allow for legal rest breaks, and all staff agreements must be in writing. Public holidays that fall near weekends, such as Easter or December, may need special planning as trading hours and staffing costs rise. Any business using casual or part-time weekend staff must still comply with all labour laws, including payslips and UIF.
A buyer’s story from Gauteng
One new pet boarding owner in Germiston shared that her first Easter brought twice the expected boarding bookings and walk-in grooming requests. She budgeted for two people per shift based on weekday traffic, but when the queues built up she lost sales and regular customers left before being served.
After reviewing the wage and hours planning in her Numbers & Notes session, she added one extra temp for all weekends and a clear Sunday shift allowance. She reported smoother sales and a sharp drop in complaints from the second month.
Steps to organise pet weekend staffing
Covering weekends well starts with a clear plan for legal hours, expected footfall and fair compensation. Use these steps before opening or taking on a franchise.
- Check weekend footfall and sales by the hour as well as by the day
- Map required roles: retail, grooming, animal care, cleaning
- Build a rota with legal maximum hours and Sunday premiums
- Budget for national minimum wage or sectoral rates as required
- Draft contracts for all staff, even temps and part-timers
- Review public holiday and peak season needs each month
